How to Make an Observer in Minecraft (and Use It)

Required To Craft An Observer

  • 6 Cobblestones
  • 2 Redstone dust
  • 1 Nether quartz

Steps To Make An Observer

1. Open Your Crafting Menu

Open your crafting table so you see the 3x3 grid like in the image below.

2. Add Items to Crafting Table

With your crafting table open, we now need to place the 6 cobblestones, 2 redstone dust, and 1 nether quartz in the grid squares, just as they are shown in the image below.

It's important the items are placed in the squares exactly as shown in the image.

In the 1st row place down 3 cobblestones. In the 2nd row place down 1 redstone in the 1st box, 1 redstone in the 2nd box, and 1 nether quartz in the 3rd box. In the 3rd row place down 3 cobblestones. That is the Minecraft observer recipe.

After you've placed the items in the appropriate boxes, you'll notice an observer will appear in the box to the right.

3. Move The Observer To Your Inventory

Finally, click on your new observer and move it down to your inventory.

To run the observer command, open your chat window and enter the appropriate command below:

What triggers an observer?

An observer is triggered when the block or fluid it's facing changes state. For example, it can detect growing crops or grass. And the different stages of flowing water.

Can an observer detect a player?

An observer does not detect a player in Minecraft. It's a feature that has been requested many times but has not been added to the observer block.

Do observers cause lag??

Observers do not cause lag in Minecraft. If you do notice lag when using an observer, it's likely because the event that triggers the observer is causing it.
