How To Get Potatoes In Minecraft

1. Find Or Place Down Water

First, we need to find a small area of water or create your own. In our example, we have simply dug a hole 5 blocks long and filled it with water.

2. Use Your Hoe

Next, select a hoe in your Hotbar and prepare the ground around the water. You can use the hoe by using the following controls on your game controller:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: right-click on the block.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the block.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the LT button.
  • PS3, PS4: press the L2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZL button.
Use Your Hoe

After you have used the hoe and removed the topsoil from the ground, you'll notice the blocks have turned brown. They are now ready for planting potatoes.

3. Plant The Potatoes

Select the potatoes in your Hotbar and plant them onto the blocks of soil that you previously used your hoe on. Plant your potatoes using the following controls on your game controller:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: right-click on the block.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the block.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the LT button.
  • PS3, PS4: press the L2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZL button.
Plant The Potatoes

Once you have planted your potatoes, you'll begin to see them grow. We can speed up that process using fertilizer!

4. Fertilize The Potatoes

Your potatoes will slowly grow over-time. Planted potatoes will go through 8 stages of growth (although you'll visibly notice 4 of those stages). However, we can speed that up by fertilizing the plants with bonemeal.

Select bonemeal in your Hotbar and use the following game controls to fertilize your potatoes:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: right-click on the plant.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the plant.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the LT button.
  • PS3, PS4: press the L2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZL button.
Fertilize The Potatoes

As you use the bonemeal, you'll notice the plants grow. Once your potato farm is fully-grown, we can harvest the potatoes.

5. Harvest The Potatoes

Lastly, we will want to harvest the crop. To do this, you simply break the potato crops using the following controls on your game controller:

  • Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: left-click on the plant.
  • Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the plant and hold.
  • Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the RT button.
  • PS3, PS4: press the R2 button.
  • Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZR button.

After you break the plant you'll notice a potato floating where the plant was. Be sure to pick the potato up before it disappears. A fully grown plant will drop between 1 to 4 potatoes. And there's a 2% chance that it will drop a poisonous potato.

And that's it! Minecraft potatoes are a food item that when eaten will restore 1 hunger and 0.6 saturation. They can also be used to lead and breed pigs.
