Tools & Supplies Needed

The items you'll need to make a fence will depend on the type of Minecraft fence you plan on making. You can choose from:

• Oak Fence: 2 sticks and 4 oak planks
• Spruce Fence: 2 sticks and 4 spruce planks
• Birch Fence: 2 sticks and 4 birch planks
• Jungle Fence: 2 sticks and 4 jungle planks
• Dark Oak Fence: 2 sticks and 4 dark oak planks
• Acacia Fence: 2 sticks and 4 acacia planks
• Nether Brick fence: 2 nether bricks and 4 blocks of nether brick

If you're building one of the wood fences from above, you will need to make sure the planks are of the same material.

Crafting a fence gate requires similar items, but instead, we'll need 4 sticks and 2 wood planks.  For example:

• Oak Fence: 4 sticks and 2 oak planks
• Spruce Fence: 4 sticks and 2 spruce planks
• Birch Fence: 4 sticks and 2 birch planks
• Jungle Fence: 4 sticks and 2 jungle planks
• Dark Oak Fence: 4 sticks and 2 dark oak planks
• Acacia Fence: 4 sticks and 2 acacia planks

Steps To Make A Fence

1. Craft A Fence

Open your crafting menu and then add 4 matching wood planks plus 2 sticks for a wood fence OR 4 blocks of nether brick and 2 nether bricks for a nether fence.

You need to make sure the items are placed into the crafting table exactly as below.

Essentially, if you're making a wood fence, the recipe is a plank in the first box, stick in the second box, and then another plank in the third box. Then repeat this pattern on the second row.

To craft a nether fence, place a nether bricks block in the first box,1 nether brick in the second box, and then another nether bricks block in the third box. Then repeat this pattern on the second row.

Once you see the fence appear in the box to the right, simply move it down to your inventory

2. Craft The Fence Gate

With your crafting menu still open, lets now craft our fence gate! Again it's important to place the items in the crafting menu in the exact order listed below.

Place a stick in the first box, a wood plank in the second box, and then a stick in the third box. Repeat this for the second row. 

Voila! You have a fence gate. Simply move it from the box at the right down to your inventory.

3. Build The Fence

With your new fence and gate items in your Hotbar, it's time to navigate to an open area to build your fence.

Once you're in the spot you want to build your fence, using the following game controls to place your fence pieces down:

• Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: right click on the block
• Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the block
• Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the LT button
• PS3, PS4: press the L2 button
• Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZL button

Once one side of the fence is down, place your cursor on the block next to the side of the fence to start building another side.  Fence posts will automatically be created.

Continue adding your fence pieces until all four sides are created, leaving one block open (for the gate).

4. Add The Fence Gate

Select the fence gate in the Hotbar and place it in the empty space using the following game controls:

• Java Edition (PC/Mac), Windows 10 Edition, Education Edition: right click on the block
• Pocket Edition (PE): tap on the block
• Xbox 360, Xbox One: press the LT button
• PS3, PS4: press the L2 button
• Wii U, Nintendo Switch: press the ZL button
